In order to develop a sound health and safety program, a number of programs should be developed, implemented, evaluated and maintained. Click the link below for a general list of health and safety programs based on IAPA/WSIB guidelines.
Nowadays, there has been an increasing demand for putting in place a management system on health and safety. What a management system can do is to formalize and systematize all health and safety initiatives in a logical manner that can be improved overtime through monitoring, evaluated for making necessary changes in future and audited to see whether the system is being followed as per the set requirements.
Similar to ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 series of standards, there is a widely known specification OHSAS 18001 on health and safety. It is not an ISO standard but a British specification but similar to the ISO standards in terms of the basic structure and general intent. Adopting the OHSAS 18001 specification refers to the fact that the company is undertaking its business by caring for the workforce and their health and safety.
The specification is applicable to those companies who want to establish an occupational health and safety (OHS) management system to eliminate or minimize risk to employees and other interested parties who may be exposed to OH&S risks associated with its activities. The system helps conform with its stated OHS policy. The content of the OHSAS 18001 is as follows:
1. Scope 2. Reference Publications 3. Terms and Definitions 4. OH&S Management System Elements 4.1 General Requirements 4.2 OH&S Policy 4.3 Planning 4.4 Implementation & Operation 4.5 Checking and Corrective Action 4.6 Management Review
